Water Bears or tardigrades belong to a lesser known phylum of microscopic invertebrate animals, the Tardigrada. The first tardigrades were discovered by Goetz in 1773. Over 400 species have been described since that time.
Recently NASA sent tardigrades into space. A few of them became the first animals to return alive after exposure to both space vacuum and solar radiation.
