DUSEL

South Dakota will eventually be the recipient of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). It will provide lab and experiment space for particle physicists some 8,000 feet below ground. The depth is important, since all that rock overhead does a bang-up job of intercepting cosmic rays, which are the energetic charged subatomic particles from space. Scheduled to open in 2020, DUSEL if funding is met.
